EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Lightweight Eric Fowler

Eric Fowler is a familiar face to fans of Houston's amateur boxing scene, but he's about to make a name for himself with pro fans as well. After training for three years with the Cardio Boxing Gym in Conroe, the 20-year-old Fowler is set to make his pro debut this summer. Fowler s moving to Pasadena to train under Kenny Weldon at the World Class Boxing Gym. We spoke with him before a recent bruising sparring session with junior welterweight John "The Lion" Rarden.

HBS - How would you describe your style?

EF - Aggressive, but now real technical. I was an aggressive fighter, I fought with a lot of natural ability but now learning the techniques from Kenny Weldon I'm becoming an all-around fighter.

HBS - Seems like you're working a little bit more on your defense. Kenny was remarking you looked a little bit like Lewis Wood in there and that would make you really hard to hit.

EF - Yeah, definitely, left-handed, southpaws are always hard to hit compared to any kind of conventional right handed fighter in the world so when you learn the art of being a left-handed fighter you can be unbeatable.

HBS - That's how you're fighting?

EF - Yes sir, left-hand fighter all the way.

HBS - Now you've decided to turn pro, and what prompted this decision?

EF - Just life, you know. Just trying to make it. Just trying to come up. I've got enough amateur experience. I've been in the amateur game for a couple of years now and fought on the national level so I might as well go on to bigger and better things. If God blesses me and he puts me number one, if I put Him number one in my heart, He'll take me straight to the top.

HBS - Do you have any idea who you might be fighting or when?

EF - I'll let Kenny that up. He's my trainer, he'll probably be my manager. We'll talk about that and go from there.

HBS - Any butterflies about the idea of turning pro?

EF - No sir. I grew up with a tough life. I'm a man now and I've got no fear in my heart whatsoever. Turning pro is just like another amateur fight. You step in the ring, that's my office, it's my home, it where I was born & raised, so no fear in my heart when I step in the ring.
