Dat Nguyen brawled with the very tough Carlos Hernandez of Indio, California!!
Noons
Nails Gallegos!!
Middleweight KJ Noons of Houston took a unanimous
decision over a gutsy Enrique Gallegos of Medford,
Oregon!! See video of round one below!
..
After the initial knockdown, Gallegos, who brought a
record of 6-4 with 1 KO, would prove to
be a very worthy opponent. Gallegos he came forward
against Noons for much of the fight. Gallegos had
lost his last two fights prior to this one, most
recently suffering a 1st round TKO against then
14-2-1 Derek Ennis in Tunica, Mississippi in July of
2008.
Noons, who has an extensive pro mixed martial arts
background, jabbed and moved, landed counter lefts
and lead right hands, and worked the angles against
Gallegos throughout the six-round contest. Noons was
coming off a unanimous six-round decision loss to
the 13-1 James Countryman in Cincinnati in March.
Gallegos probably won the fourth and fifth rounds by
pressing the attack and nailing Noons with several
shots to the body and head. But Noons came back
strong in a highly entertaining sixth round to seal
the victory.
Two judges scored the fight 60-53 for Noons,
although the third judge probably had a more
accurate score of 58-55 Noons. Noons
comes away with a unanimous decision win and
improves to 9-2 with 5 KO's.
"Tin Tin"
Rips
Reinhold!
Welterweight
Gerardo "Tin Tin" Ibarra of Houston pounded
out Dustin Reinhold of Fall River,
Massachusetts!
See video of
round one below!
..
Tin Tin came
in a 3-0 with 2 KO's and he seemed to
possess superior boxing speed, accuracy and
power. A left hook to the body sent Reinhold
to the canvas in round two, and Ibarra would
continue to hurt his opponent with hooks to
the head and body.
But Reinhold, coming in at 1-0 with 1
KO, was a tough opponent who landed several
good shots in combination, while trying to
be aggressive.
..
But before
long Ibarra began to pull away and he hurt
Reinhold with a blasting left hook in the
third round. The shot opened up a nasty cut
over Reinhold's right eye and Referee Sam
Garza stopped the fight at 1:47 of the
third.

Mejia Mashes
Gover!
Welterweight Gustavo
"Chilando" Mejia of Kansas City, Missouri shocked
Jonathan Gover of San Antonio with a first
round knockout!!
Mejia connected with
big right hands to score three knockdowns in the
first round!
Mejia came in at
2-6-1 with 2 KO's, while "Game Over" Gover was
making his pro debut. But Mejia's last six fights,
resulting in five losses and a draw, had all been
against undefeated fighters. Mejia had knocked out
the 20-12-1 Ray Collins in the 1st round in Topeka,
Kansas in November of 2007.
"Game Over"
came out fast and landed a shot but couldn't get away
from Mejia's right hand and by the third knockdown
it was over, and the referee stopped the contest at
1:09 of the first round!!
Valenzuela Over
Bernal
Jr.
Featherweight Rafael Valenzuela of
Phoenix, Arizona blasted out a
lopsided four-round decision over
former contender the journeyman Jose Garcia Bernal of Miami,
Florida!
Valenzuela
came in at 12-1 with 6 KO's to Bernal's
27-15-1 with 18 KO's. The 38-year-old Bernal
had lost his last eight fights in a row and
was 2-12 in his last 14 fights, having been
TKO'd in the 11th round by Roberto Vasquez
in challenging for the WBO Latino Light
Flyweight title in Panama in 2004. Valenzuela outslugged
and outclassed Bernal with superior reach
and solid combinations to the head and body.
When Bernal did attack Valenzuela landed
multiple countershots, worked Bernal into
the ropes and delivered the punishment.
Bernal went down once in the fourth. All
three judges scored the bout 40-35 for
Valenzuela.
"Be Dat" Batters Hernandez!
Featherweight Dat "Be Dat Nguyen, of
Saigon/Vero Beach, Florida, pounded out a brilliant
victory! The card as a whole was an outstanding
start in Houston for TKO Promotions!
The fighters traded shots from the opening bell.
There was nothing subtle or strategic going on
for much of the fight. The two men appeared to have
comparable physical skills, although Nguyen might
have been a little quicker. It was largely a test of
wills.
Nguyen brought a
record of 14-1 with 6 KO's, while Hermandez came in
at 14-6-1 with 5 KO's. Nguyen had won his last three
fights since his sole loss, a six-round split
decision defeat against then 4-0 Gregorio Torres in
Tucson, Arizona in August of 2007.
Nguyen's most
notable victory to date was a unanimous eight-round
decision over the 9-2 Castulo Gonzalez in Boston,
Massachusetts in July of 2007.
The 32-year-old
Hernandez has been ten rounds on five different
occasions, including a unanimous decision loss to
Johnny Tapia in Las Vegas in1998. Hernandez also
fought to a ten-round draw against then 17-0
Trinidad Mendoza in Tijuana, Mexico in March of
2000, but he had not had a pro fight in almost nine
years.
The fighters banged
away to the head and body of each other for most of eight
rounds!
This
was a grand slugfest in which the momentum would
swing back and forth.
See video of round 4
below!
..
Nguyen got off more solid shots throughout
the match. Nguyen had a point deducted in the 7th
for holding and hitting, while Hernandez had a point
deducted in the 8th for pushing Nguyen through the
ropes.
..
Two judges
scored the bout 77-73 for Nguyen, while a third had
it at 78-71, giving Nguyen the unanimous decision!.
Dat "Be Dat" Nguyen
improves to 15-1 with 6 KO's!

"Fireman"
Extinguishes
Cunningham!
Jr. Middleweight
Lanard "Fireman" Lane of Philadelphia used blazing hand
speed and vicious body shots to stop Billy Ray
Cunningham of Jackson, Mississippi!
..
Cunningham, who came
in a 3-2 with 3 KO's, proved to
be a fairly durable opponent, firing back shots and
advancing forward for much of the fight, but Lane's
speed, power and accuracy would prove to be
overwhelming.
Lane continued to
hurt Cunningham in round two and the referee gave a
standing eight count.
Lanard Lane improves
to 6-0 with 5 KO's!
Tovar Defeats Dunwell!
Welterweight Raul
Tovar of Mission, Texas battled to a six-round split decision
win over previously undefeated Simeon Dunwell of Lynn, Massachussets!
Tovar came in at 5-1
with 2 KO's while Dunwell brought a record of 9-0
with 2 KO's.
It was a classic
struggle pitting Dunwell the boxer and mover against
Tovar the puncher.
See video of round
two below!
..
The fight remained
close as the fighters traded shots.
Dunwell wobbled Tovar in round three.
A left hook from
Tovar sent Dunwell to the canvas and led the referee to give Dunwell a standing
eight count in round five.
Dunwell continued to
land combinations in the final round.
"I think he
was
just slapping around like an amateur fighter," said
Tovar after the match. "I didn't see any damage in
there. But he was pretty quick though, I'll give him
that."
One judge scored the
bout 57-56 for Tovar, while another had the same
score for Dunwell, and the third judge scored it
59-54 for Tovar, giving him the split decision.
