Soto-Karass came into the match with four straight wins over previously undefeated Michael Rosales, Vince Phillips, Fernando Mena and Juan Yoani Cervantes. He  improves to 16-3-2 with 13 KO's.

Soto-Karass Keeps Title!!!

Welterweight Jesus Soto-Karass blasted the tough Perez with several head shots, finally opening a deep cut over Perez's left eye, and the fight was stopped after the sixth round. The bout headlined a nine-fight card at the Houston Grand Plaza Hotel, put on by Top Rank Boxing and Bobby Jones Promotions, and televised nationally on the Spanish language network Telefutura.

\The contest was brutal and satisfying. At 5'10", Soto-Karass was the taller of the two fighters and he immediately took advantage, landing big  shots to the head of Perez. The first round would have to be described as great, in that the champion landed multiple shots against a game challenger who fired back and landed solidly.

The pattern for the battle thus set, with Soto-Karass landing right overhand and left uppercut bombs to the head of Perez, who would then charge back and hammer to the body of the champion.

Soto-Karass measured with the jab in round three, while Perez answered back with a looping right shot to the head. Just seconds before the bell the champion snapped back the challenger's head with a big right hand.

Early in round four Perez raged back with a left hand that caused "El Renuente's " knees to buckle.

But

But later in round four Soto-Karass would land the shot that opened a deep cut over the left eye of Perez, and followed it up with several shots to the head.

The Champion remained methodical in round five, following a stiff jab with a power shot, and holding off a later charge from Perez, and in Round Six, Soto-Karass hammered home a crunching right hand to the head, followed up with several blistering shots and took another power right to the chin from Perez. Bout officials stoped the fight between the sixth and seventh rounds due to the cut on Perez's eye. He falls to 14-5-1 with 12 KO's.

Flores Batters Trumble!!

In one of the best performances of his pro career, "El Michoacano" hammered out a unanimous decision over the veteran Steve Trumble of Baton Rouge!!

Trumble started off strong, landing shots to the Flores' head early.

Flores stuck to his effective body attack, ripping left and rights to Trumble's rib cage. Trumble's corner was telling him to stay moving by round three.

Trumble seemed determined to hang tough, firing back and landing nice shots against Flores' skull, but Flores apparently felt he had the fight in his control.

Trumble began moving forward early in round four, but Flores came back with a right to the head and several lefts. Trumble backed into the ropes, and "El Michoacano" pursued his prey.

RouRound five would be nothing short of spectacular, as Trumble came out hard early, perhaps realizing he was on the losing end of the match.

But Flores fired back in spades, cornering Trumble, and near the end of the round, firing off at least 20 shots!

.

Two of the three judges scored the bout, 59-55 Flores, while the third had it 58-56!

Flores improves to 14-2 with 4 KO's while Trumble falls to 12-21 with 8 KO's!

Trout Trounces Finley!

Undefeated Super Welterweight hot prospect Austin "No Doubt" Trout made short work of the journeyman Cardyl "Smiley" Finley.

Finley came out intense and aggressive, snapping his jab and landing a right hand. But the southpaw Trout responded with a 1-2 combination to Finley's face.

Trout landed a solid left early in round two, then a second big left as Finley came in, and it was all over, with Finley dropping like a tree at 1:30 of the second round.

Trout improves to 6-0 with 6 KO's while the 35-year-old Finley comes away at 6-18-1 with 1 KO.

Gonzales Batters Boone!

H     Middleweight Jesus "El Martillo" Gonzales of Phoenix won a unanimous six-round decision over Darnell Boone of Youngstown, Ohio.

Boone brought a record of 13-7-2 with five KO's, including a loss to Andre Ward, but he was coming off three straight wins.  The two fighters tied up early in the first round and as they were wrestling, a right hand from Boone caught Gonzales on the face and he went down, largely the result of being off balance during the tie-up.

But in the second round Gonzales began landing rapid combinations to the body of Boone, and in round three the southpaw "El Martillo" began landing power left hands to the head as Boone pressed in. Boone remained strong throughout the match, landing a nice right to the face of Gonzales in round three, when Gonzales would develop a profuse nosebleed.

"He liked to hold and hit," Gonzales said after the bout. "He hit me with a couple of headbutts but he was a pretty tough guy."

Gonzales' trainer Kenny Weldon urged patience in round five, and the match turned into a somewhat messy affair, with repeated tie-ups, and the referee warned Boone for holding and hitting. Gonzales landed a solid straight left in round six, the fighters exchanged right hands, and early in round seven Gonzales landed some straight lefts to the body of Boone.

"Don't let him get set,", Weldon told Gonzales from the corner, and after Boone landed a right to the body Gonzales came back with a quick combination.

Boone landed a right to the chin in round eight and the fighters ended the match with a solid exchange of punches.

The scores were 77-74, 76-75, and 78-73, all for Gonzales, who improves to 20-1 with 11 KO's. "It was easy from the outside," Gonzales said.

Ch
"Lion" Roars Over De Leon!!

Undefeated Super Lightweight John "The Lion" Rarden of Pasadena, Texas faced Lee De Leon of Houston. Rarden opened strong, landing a right to the body and then a left hook that sent De Leon to the canvas.

But De Leon would remain a game opponent throughout the four-round contest.

An exchange in the second round would leave a slight cut on the left eye of De Leon.

Rarden opened strong in round three, landing several shots, although De Leon continued to press forward. Rarden began launching the uppercut, and late in the round a right uppercut snapped De Leon's head back.

De Leon landed some body shots in round four and seemed to have a sense of urgency, perhaps realizing he was likely behind on the judges' scorecards.  Rarden remained relaxed and smiling, and blasted off several shots toward the end of round four when he got De Leon against the ropes.

All three judges scored the bout 40-35 for Rarden, who improves to 6-0 with one knockout. De Leon falls to 2-6 with 2 KO's. "I didn't fight my fight,", Rarden said after the match. "I wasn't happy with it. There's a lot of little things I need to do," (regarding improvements to his fight plan and skills),"But I got the win, I guess that's all that matters. I can do better than that."

Hill Hammers White!!

Eugene "Mean Gene" Hill of Houston demonstrated he could well be a force to be reckoned with during a crippling knockout over Willie White!

Hill weighed in at 256 lbs, and looked as though he could use some extra roadwork, but left no doubt as to his power against the 198 lb. White, from Houston, who was making his pro debut.

Hill began by advancing with his hands up, and Whtle took the opportunity to fire several rights and lefts to the head of his larger opponent. But in just a matter of seconds "Mean Gene" ripped off a vicious left and then a monstrous right to the head of White, which left him stretched out like a mackerel at 2:15 of the 1st round..

 Velardez Smashes Silva

Jonathan "Boneyard Baby Velardez of San Bernardino, California, continued wading through the Super Flyweight division with an easy knockout over Pedro Silva of Villa Hermoso, Mexico.

Velardez started out with quick and solid combinations early in round one, and a right to the top of Silva's head send him down. A left to the body from the Boneyard Baby sent Silva down a second time and the referee counted him out on a knee, the match ending at 1:13 of the 1st round. Velardez improves to 4-0 with 4 KO's while Silva falls to 1-6.

Ramirez Tames Lyons!

In what would loosely be described as a matchup, Brian Ramirez of of  Los Angeles made his his pro debut against Josh Lyons of Shreveport, Louisiana, who brought a record of 0-4.

If we had been taking bets, and of course no one takes bets at ringside in Texas because gambling is illegal, but if we had been taking them, the question would not have been who would win, but how long the fight would last.

A barely perceptible right sent Lyons to a knee and he would not rise, with the bout ending at the count of 1:59 of the first round.

     Shields Smacks Smith!!

Undefeated Super Middleweight Chase "White Tiger" Shields of Houston fought a relatively uneventful six-round contest against Josh Smith of LaVergne, Tennessee.

The southpaw Shields dominated the match with his jab, using his reach advantage and occasionally landing a combination, while Smith placed his slim hopes on landing a big overhand right.

But Smith was not able to land many solid shots and Shields coasted to victory once again, improving his record to 22-0-1 with 12 KO's. Smith falls to 17-30-1 with 15 KO's.
