Dat Nguyen and Andres Ledesma
engaged in an epic battle at the Arena Theater on October 10th of 2009!!
Hill
Hammers Harris!
Heavyweight Eugene Hill of Dickinson, Texas
pounded down Joseph Harris of Memphis, Tennessee in a scheduled six-round bout.
See
round one below!
..
Hill weighed in at
252 pounds and he brought a record of 17-1 with 14 KO's. "Mean Gene" was coming off a controversial eight-round split decision win over Zack Page in August in Houston.
Harris
weighed in at 226 lbs. and came in at 10-9 with 7 KO's, having
most recently lost to Andres Taylor in Maryland in
August.
But
Harris had won four fights in a row prior to that,
and he was tailor-made for Hill, in that he would
stand still and attempt to slug with "Mean Gene".
It
was clear early on this would be a losing effort
Harris as he tried to beat the much too powerful
Hill at his own game. Harris took a knee
from the beating in round two.
See the rest of round two below!
..
Hill continued blasting away at Harris, who was
clearly a very strong athlete in his own right, but
nowhere near the league of "Mean Gene".
Harris continued to deflate in round three, being
wobbled by a left hook. As the two fighters leaned
in to attempt to press the advantage over one
another throughout the match, it could be heard that
they were talking to one another, although exactly
what they were saying was not discernible at
ringside.
"He
was telling me I hit hard", Hill said with a smile
after the match.
Harris' corner motioned to Referee Ronnie Ralston to
stop the bout at 1:23 of the fourth
round.
"Stingray"
Sticks Primero!
Former WBO Flyweight Champion Rayonta "Stingray" Whitfield of Augusta, Georgia took on Evaristo Primero of El Paso
in an eight-round bout.
Whitfield brought a record of 21-1 with 11 KO's and was coming off a 10th round TKO loss to Omar Andres Narvaez in losing the WBO title in Argentina in February of 2009.
Primero came in at 14-21-1 with 7 KO's and had lost seven of this last eight fights, including an eight-round unanimous decision loss to Whitfield in Augusta in 2006.
But Primero
would prove to be a surprisingly difficult
and cagey fighter, lasting the entire eight
rounds and landing several good shots on
Whifield in each round.
See Round
Two!
..
Primero ripped
Whitfield with several solid body shots in round
three, then switched up and demonstrated good
movement in round four.
Whitfield landed the
jab from long range and them hammered Primero with
uppercuts.

..
One judge scored the
bout 80-71, another 80-72, and a third 78-74, all
for Whitfield, giving him the unanimous decision.
"Tin Tin" Chomps "El
Chilango"!
Welterweight Gerardo "Tin Tin" Ibarra of Houston
made short work of Gustavo "El Chilango" Mejia of
Kansas City!
Ibarra came in at 5-0 with 4 KO's and he was coming off a 3rd round TKO of John DeJean in Texarkana on September 30th.
On paper Mejia is a deceptive fighter, having lost almost
exclusively to undefeated opponents, and with three
1st round KO's to his credit, including (then 20-12)
Ray Collins in Topeka in 2007, and Jonathan Glover
in Houston in May of 2009. But he was no match for
Ibarra.

one below!

Bey Bashes Lynks!
Undefeated Lightweight Mickey Bey Jr. of Cleveland took on Michaelangelo Lynks of Los Angeles in a scheduled six-round bout.
Bey came in at 13-0 with 7 KO's and was coming off an eight-round split decision win over Rashad Gashway at the Toyota Center in August 22nd, on the undercard of the Diaz-Malignaggi match.
Lynks brought a record of 7-11-2 with 6 KO's and had lost nine of his last ten fights.
But Lynks did
demonstrate a stout chin and landed some solid shots
to Bey's head in round one.
A left hook from Bey
sent Lynks to the canvas in round two.
Bey continued to
blast Lynks through round six, and in the end all
judges scored the bout 60-53, giving Bey the
unanimous decision.
Nguyen Whips Ledesma!!
Featherweight Dat "Be Dat" Nguyen of Vero Beach,
Florida fought a bloody eight-round war with Andres
Ledesma of Colombia in one of the best fights to be
held in Houston in recent memory, possibly the best
since Christy Martin/Valerie Mahfood at the Reliant
Center in July of 2008!
See round one below!
..
A native of Bien Hoa, Vietnam, training under the guidance of former world champion Buddy McGirt, the 26-year-old Nguyen,
now 17-1-0 (6 KO’s), battled Andres Ledesma of Miami 15-15-1 (10 KO’s), in a scheduled eight round bout.
Nguyen thrilled Houston fight fans on May 28th with an action packed eight-round decision over Carlos Hernandez at the Arena Theatre, following that up with a unanimous decision win over Noe Lopez Jr. on August 22nd, in front of a huge crowd at the Pala Casino Spa and Resort in Southern California, running his unbeaten streak to five.
Ledesma had lost his last three fights, most recently a 1st round TKO stoppage at the hands of Carlos Ivan Velasquez of Fort Worth on May 8th.
The 29-year-old Ledesma did engage in a back and forth slugfest with two time world champion Jesus Chavez prior to being stopped in the ninth round in a bout at the Toyota Center in September 2008.
Ledesma would prove to be an excellent match for
Nguyen as the fighters hammered each other back and
forth for eight rounds.
A left hook sent
Ledesma to the canvas early in the second round.
See the rest of round two below!
..
The fighters
maintained a punishing pace for the entire eight
rounds.
Each man would
engage in a few seconds of positioning, after which
Nguyen would often launch in first with a solid
and accurate combination to the head.
But several times Ledesma caught Nguyen coming in, or countered
with vicious hooks and uppercuts.
Ledesma suffered a cut over his left eye in the fifth round,
and Nguyen would take a nasty cut in the mouth in
the sixth.
Ledesma became more successful in the
seventh and eighth rounds.
See
round seven below!
..
The action continued
into the final round!
..
One judge scored the
fight 79-72, another had it 78-73, and the third saw
it at 80-71, all for Nguyen. HoustonBoxingScene.com
scored it 78-73 for Nguyen.

Noons Pounds Perez!
Middleweight KJ Noons of Houston faced Julio
"El Cubano" Perez of Mission, Texas.
Noons, also a world champion mixed martial artist, brought a record of 10-2 with 5 KO's, coming off a unanimous six-round decision win over Randy Pogue in California in August.
Noons dominated the fight from the outset,
blasting the durable Perez with combinations
to the body and head.
The wild-swinging Perez nailed Noons with
several looping bombs, but they seemed to
have little effect.
Perez's left eye began to close in round
four as he absorbed more and more
punishment.
See Video of
round five below!..
Noons called
out Chase "White Tiger" Shields of Houston after winning,
saying he wanted to fight Shields in the
Bayou City.
All three
judges scored the bout 60-54 for Noons.
Garcia
Wallops Walton!
Welterweights David
"El Gordo" Garcia of Oxnard, Calfornia,
(right, above) and Artis Walton of Amarillo
were both making their pro debuts.
Garcia opened up
landing left hooks to the face, while Walton
connected with a couple of right hands to
the head.
A big right
hand hurt Walton near the end of the round
as the two entered into a spectacular
exchange.
In the next
round a right hand from Garcia sent Walton
the canvas and the referee stopped the
contest at :37 seconds of round two.
Garcia with
Promoter Chet Koerner
Contreras Crushes Boyd!
Undefeated Junior Welterweight
Francisco Contreras of Irvington,
New Jersey quickly dispatched Ronald
Boyd of Washington, D.C.
Contreras, the WBC European Champion,
came in at 10-0 with 10 KO's while
Boyd brought a record of 6-8 with 2
KO's. Contreras knocked Boyd down
three times and the referee stopped
the contest at 2:10 of the first
round.
