 "Showtime" Slaughters "Gorilla"!

Fred "Showtime" Allen of LaMarque, Texas quickly destroyed "The Vanilla Gorilla", Heavyweight Brad Bowers of Houston.

This was a chance for Bowers to get back on the winning track. Bowers brought a record of 5-9 with 5 KO's. He had been knocked out in the first round of his last three fights, and had not fought in almost two years, most recently losing to Eric Molina in Harlingen in October of 2007. Allen came in at 1-0 with 1 KO, having easily dispatched Othello Jackson in the first round a month earlier in Humble.

The stoppage came at just :47 seconds of the first round.

 

"White Tiger" Claws Brashears!

Chase Shields of Houston put on a fine boxing display in taking on the tough and quick-handed Marcus Brashears of Amarillo.

Shields came in at 28-2-1 with 14 KO's, last registering a crippling fifth round KO over Cliff English on August 6th.

 Brashears came in at 7-12-1 with 2 KO's, most recently winning a unanimous six-round decision over Jose "Topita" Gutierrez in Houston on July 11th. 

Shields got off first with combinations in the second round. Brashears tried to advance but the "White Tiger" was too elusive.

Brashears would hammer Shields with the occasional solid combination to the head and body in each round of the fight. Brashears came forward for much of the match, but could rarely catch up to the circling Shields. Shields would pepper Brashears with combinations and shots to the body and head. 

 

 Brashears was at his best in the sixth and final round.

One judge scored the bout 60-54 for Shields, another had it 58-56 Shields, while the third scored the match 59-55 Brashears, giving Shields a split decision. HoustonBoxingScene.com had it 59-55 Shields.

 

 

Junot Grinds Grimes!

     Light Welterweight Tiffany Junot of Houston faced Jessica Grimes of Texarkana. Junot brought a record of 6-2-1 with 4 KO's and she was coming off a bruising 6-round draw against Kimberly Connor in August.

 Grimes came in at 1-0 with 1 KO.

"Freight Train" Takes "Third Ward"

    Steve "Freight Train" Collins of Houston took on "Third Ward" Billy Willis, also of Houston.

 Willis weighed in at 233 lbs. while Collins tipped the scales at 253.

Willis brought a record of 11-16-1 with 9 KO's, coming off a six-round majority decision loss to "Crazy" Robbie McClimans on September 16th in Conroe.

 Collins came in at 20-1 with 15 KO's, his only loss being a TKO stoppage by "Rhino" Scott Rossum at the D & I International Ballroom in Houston in October of 2005. Collins last won a unanimous six-round decision over the journeyman Dennis McKinney in Houston on August 6th.

The fighters took a breather in round five, and then Willis began to stick Collins with the jab in round six.

The fighters traded clubbing shots in a relatively even round seven, but the "Freight Train" seemed to have too much steam for Willis in the final round.

Two judges scored the bout 77-75 for Collins, while the third had it 78-74 Collins, giving him the unanimous decision! It was close fight which could have legitimately been awarded to either fighter. The win gives Collins the North American Midwest Association Heavyweight Title.

Aguilera Jolts Johnson!

Heavyweight Nagy Aguilera of Newburgh, New York had little trouble with Jerome Johnson of Texarkana, Texas!

 

 Aguilera, originally from the Dominican Republic, brought a record of 13-2 with 8 KO's, and he was coming off an eight-round split decision loss to Darrell Madison in New York in July.

 Johnson came in at 2-0 with 2 KO's, having last knocked out Buddy Cochrane in the second round in Texarkana in August. Aguilera weighed in at 229 lbs. while Johnson came in at 203.

To his credit, Johnson tried to make a fight of it during the early part of the first round.

Guzman Smacks Solis!

Welterweight Jimmy "Two Guns" Guzman of Houston displayed superior firepower against Edwin Solis, also of Houston.

Guzman, who is being trained by former middleweight champion Frank Tate, was making his pro debut.

The match seemed relatively even through the second and into the third round, but Guzman began to dominate in the fourth.

All three judges scored the bout 40-36 for Guzman.
