Jesus "El Martillo" Gonzales with Promoter Bobby Jones and Trainer Kenny Weldon

"El Martillo" Forges Victory!!

Gonzales came back from an early deficit to rip Richardson with big shots in the middle and later rounds to win the most difficult fight of his pro career.

Richardson, who brought a record of 10-1 with 4 KO's, landed the jab repeatedly in the opening rounds, drawing blood from the nose of Gonzales.

"That guy was really slick. He was hard to hit and it took me a long time to figure him out," Gonzales said after the match, the first time he had gone 12 rounds.

"I started out cold," said Gonzales, who had dropped down from middleweight to super welterweight for the bout. "I lost a lot of weight for this fight. I haven't fought at 154 since I was an amateur so it feels good to be back down and he was probably the toughest opponent I ever fought.

Richardson, of Youngstown, Ohio, was coming off a 10-round unanimous decision loss to Deandre Latimore on December 6th.

Gonzales slammed a left to the body of Richardson in round three and was chasing him by the end of the round.

A huge collision between the fighters opened round four as both landed shots, and Gonzales continued to land right hands to the head of "Too Slick" Richardson. By the end of the round it was evident that Richardson was trying to avoid Gonzales' power.

The referee deducted one point from Richardson for holding in the fifth round. He came out aggressive in the sixth, landing a big left-right combination to the face of Gonzales early. Gonzales, who had predicted a fifth or sixth round knockout, came back later with a looping left to the head.

"This guy was real tricky," said Gonzales. "He's been around for a long time. I knew him in the amateurs so I knew what he was capable of doing. He was a good boxer. I was predicting a knockout but I always predict a knockout."

Gonzales continued hammering with body shots in round seven, and closed the round with a big left hand to the head.

Richardson opened round eight with a right to the head, the followed with a combination that mostly missed.

Gonzales came back with a solid left, followed by a 1-2 combination to the head.

Richardson remained competitive throughout the later rounds, but Gonzales seemed to have the clear edge in rounds 11 and 12, as he landed bombs in combination and pursued Richardson around the ring.

The

The judges' scores were 118-109, 117-110 and 116-111, all for Gonzales, who says he takes some lessons from the effort.

"I learned how to keep control, not to rush anything because sometimes I catch myself rushing. He would catch me coming in. But it was a good experience for me."

Gonzales' trainer Kenny Weldon says the crowd-pleasing main event will not be the last for Houston fans.

"The guy was a good fighter," said Weldon. "Everybody in Houston wants good fighters in here. They want to see local guys fight good fighters. Well we've done that. We gave them what they wanted and we gave it to them here at the Arena Theater so as to let them know that we mean business for Houston. We're not here to do anything but win a world championship.  I want to scream at the top of my lungs right now, come on Floyd (Mayweather). You say nobody wants to fight you. We do. We want to fight him. We want him bad."

Gonzales improves to 24-1 with 13 KO's!!

Castaneda Smacks Santin!

Super featherweight "Iron" Alicio Castaneda pounded out a tough but unanimous four-round decision over Octavio Santin of Mexico!

The fighters were tentative in the first minute of round one, and then Castaneda began to bore in and land body shots. Santin landed effective countershots and moved away from Castaneda's power.

In the first seconds of round two Santin completely drilled Castaneda with a right to the head, which snapped his head back. Castanada recovered well and bulled Santin into the ropes, where he landed combinations to the body and head.

"He's a tough son of a gun I'll tell you this," Castaneda said after the fight. "I hit him with some hard shots that people can't take in the gym but this dude took it."

All three judges scored the bout 40-36 for Castaneda. Santin falls to 0-2.

Alicio Castaneda improves to 2-1 with 1 KO!

White Wastes Flores!

Super Middleweight Cornelius White of Houston faced a virtual non-opponent in Noberto Flores. White immediately forced Flores into the ropes and landed a combination to the head.  Flores went down and the fight was over in just :27 seconds.

White improves to 4-1 with 3 KO's! Flores falls to 2-4.

Lane Destroys Davis!!

Making his pro debut, Welterweight Lanard Lane of Houston easily overpowered Cimerron Davis of Baton Rouge.

Lane landed multiple shots to the face of Davis, scoring two knockdowns. Davis, who brought a record of 2-2, presented no real competition to Lane, who has an extensive amateur background, and the fight was over in just :43 seconds!

Greeley!

Undefeated Super Middleweight Marcus "Too Much" Johnson of Houston punished the journeyman Anthony Greeley of Monroe, Louisiana.

The contest was never really in doubt as Johnson hammered away at Greeley's head and body. Johnson began by being methodical and patient in the first round, then turned up the heat in round two.

The late replacement Greeley, who brought a record of 7-26-3 with 1 KO, managed to survive the second round, answering occasionally, but with little effect.

Johnson continued the pounding in round three.

At :48 seconds into the fourth round Greeley's corner wisely threw in the towel.

Marcus "Too Much" Johnson improves to 15-0 with 12 KO's!!

Hernandez Hammers Johnson!

.  Chris "Hollywood" Hernandez of Houston had little trouble getting rid of Carlo Johnson of Tennessee in his pro debut!!

The comically awkward Johnson, who brought a record of 0-1, never had any chance of competing in the fight.

A Henderson ripped Johnson with several shots, snapping his head back and scoring one knockdown. Johnson could see he was outmatched and didn't look as though he had any desire to continue toward the end of the first round.  Johnson did not come out for the second round.

Chris Hernandez is 1-0 with 1 KO!

Vallecillo Beats Bolanos!

In a solid and highly entertaining matchup, Lightweights Justo "El Nica" Vallecillo of San Antonio and Oliver Bolanos of Houston slugged it out for six rounds.

Vallecillo seemed to be the crisper puncher, but Bolanos showed great heart throughout, taking big shots and continuing to come forward to the end.

Bolanos landed a solid left hand to the face of Vallecillo in round two, but Vallecillo responded with at least four lead right hands to the face of Bolanos.

Vallecillo opened round three with a solid 1-2 straight combination to the face, followed by an uppercut.

Bolanos seemed to be tiring, but he opened round four with a big flurry of punches as he tried to take the momentum away from Vallecillo.

The fighters continued to trade bombs through rounds five and six.  Vallecillo rocked Bolanos with a huge left in the final round, but Bolanos just kept throwing shots of his own.

Two judges scored the bout 58-56, while the third scored it 59-55, all for "El Nica". Bolanos falls to 4-12-1 with 1 KO.

Justo Vallecillo improves to 4-4 with 2 KO's!
